On May 29, 2025, Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) had the pleasure of hosting four medical students from the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.
The students visited Gateway CERH as part of their Discovery Week. Discovery Week is an opportunity for first-year medical students to visit a community in Southwestern Ontario and explore its local healthcare environment.
Gateway CERH is working collaboratively with the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry to promote interest in rural health. Through the partnership, the Discovery Healthcare Camp will be hosted at Camp Klahanie from July 7th – 11th for high school students.
During their visit, research assistants, Kate Maloney, Erica Maloney, Madi Cardno, Nyden Greenfield and Julie Wein had the opportunity to present Gateway CERH’s ongoing projects. The research assistants offered the medical students valuable insight into the unique healthcare challenges facing rural communities in Huron, Perth, Grey and Bruce Counties. The presentations highlighted how Gateway CERH is actively working to address these issues through research, advocacy, and innovative solutions. These include the Skilled Healthcare Attraction and Retention Program (SHARP) and Farmers’ Safety and Wellbeing.
Throughout the day, the students engaged with curiosity and enthusiasm, asking thoughtful questions and offering fresh perspectives. Our conversations ranged from the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare to government health policies and the students' experiences in medical school.
The Gateway CERH team appreciated the opportunity to engage with the medical students and for their insights and interest in rural health research.
