BRAVE
Firefighters

Benefitting Rural Area Volunteer Emergency Firefighters. This project aims to promote health among rural volunteer firefighters in Huron County by providing medical screening and education for cardiovascular health.

Project Background

Firefighters do a lot for our rural communities. They fight fires, provide rapid response to medical and non-medical emergencies and essential community messaging for health and safety. However, they do not receive access to the same resources, training or health initiatives as their urban counterparts. Following the tragic events in Bayfield in 2023, where a firefighter had a medical emergency while responding to a boater in distress, Gateway CERH has worked to develop a community-powered health initiative with the aim of preventing future tragedies.
