Benefitting Rural Area Volunteer Emergency Firefighters project aims to promote the health of rural volunteer firefighters in Huron County.

Project Background

Firefighters play a crucial role in our rural communities, bravely battling fires and responding swiftly to emergencies. Despite their dedication, they often lack the same resources, training and health initiatives available to urban firefighters. In light of the tragic events in Bayfield in 2023, where a firefighter faced a medical emergency while aiding a boater, Gateway CERH is committed to creating a-powered health initiative. This initiative aims to enhance support and prevent future tragedies, ensuring our heroes are equipped to serve and protect effectively.

Project Goals

Improve Cardiovascular Health Awareness

Provide educational programs and resources to increase rural volunteer firefighters' knowledge about cardiovascular health risks and preventive measures specific to their physically demanding roles.

Offer Comprehensive Medical Screenings

Facilitate regular cardiovascular health screenings for rural volunteer firefighters in Huron County to identify any signs of health-related issues and promote timely intervention and care.

Provide Resources For Overall Health Risks

Implement targeted initiatives that encourage healthier lifestyles among volunteer firefighters, including fitness programs, nutritional advice, and stress management techniques.

Strengthen Collaboration with Local Stakeholders

Build partnerships with stakeholders to ensure volunteer firefighters have access to continuous medical support and care, enhancing their overall long-term health outcomes.
