Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) is excited to announce that it is partnering with the Goderich Legion Branch 109 to deliver two new programs for our community:
Legion Learning is a dedicated space for senior (aged 55+) community members to improve their tech literacy through educational talks and a mentoring system for one-on-one, personalized help. This includes specialized hands-on learning for online banking, fraud/scams, and basic technology use.
Legion Lounge is a social space and cafe for our senior (aged 55+) community, filled with various physical and cognitive-based games aimed at creating camaraderie and healthy competition while improving both physical and mental well-being. This space holds a driving simulator, which allows the user to engage in cognitive development by practicing their driving skills and enhancing their recreation time and hand-eye coordination.
With these learning opportunities, the aim is to combat social isolation and loneliness through community building and establishing relationships. With Goderich specifically having a 32% population of 65+, there is a need for healthy aging programming in our rural community.
Both programs will be run out of the Goderich Legion Branch 109 located at 56 Kingston Street, Goderich, Ontario, and is open to the public on Monday's and Friday's 1:00pm to 4:00pm. These are both made possible through the TD Ready Commitment Connected Communities Fund and the New Horizons for Seniors Program funding, and the dedicated work of Gateway CERH's research assistants.
There are one to two keynote speakers a month on various topics. On June 3, there is an OPP officer coming to the Goderich Legion to talk about online frauds and scam calls. It's open to anyone in the community aged 55+, you don't even have to be a Legion member!
