Last Thursday, July 10, the hallways and balconies of Southbridge Care Home in Goderich were filled with the colours of fresh plants, and the smiles of residents watching their new garden spaces come to life.

Madi and Nancy from Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) teamed up with volunteer Cindy for an afternoon of planting as part of the Cultivating Memories project. Together, they brought in plants for raised garden beds and added a touch of green to each floor, as well as the main courtyard.

The Southbridge Care Home in Goderich marks the seventh long-term care home in Huron County to be part of this growing initiative, which uses gardening as a way to bring joy, connection, and a sense of purpose to residents. The raised garden beds are designed to be accessible for all, helping residents engage with nature no matter their mobility.

With the gardens now in place, residents will have the opportunity to tend to plants, share memories of their gardens, and simply enjoy the beauty of nature right outside their door.

A garden party is just around the corner to celebrate this newest addition to the Cultivating Memories family!

The project is made possible with generous support from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, and this planting day was helped along by a thoughtful donation of 8 bags of soil from the Goderich Canadian Tire.
