West Huron Care Centre Hosts Garden Party to Celebrate ‘Cultivating Memories & Pollinator Pathways’ Project

On Friday morning, residents, staff, local leaders, and daycare children gathered at the West Huron Care Centre in Zurich for a garden party celebrating Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health's (CERH) Cultivating Memories & Pollinator Pathways project.

The initiative brings raised garden beds to long-term care and retirement homes across Huron County, creating spaces where residents can enjoy gardening, connect with nature, and cultivate new memories with each other. This summer, the project expanded to West Huron Care Centre in Zurich and Maplewood Manor in Seaforth, bringing Gateway CERH closer to its goal of establishing gardens at every long-term care and retirement home in Huron County.

The gardens are already making an impact at West Huron Care Centre. Residents have been weeding, harvesting vegetables, and even baking zucchini bread with their fresh produce. Children from the on-site daycare added their own touch by painting rocks and garden decorations for the raised beds.

Gateway CERH gratefully acknowledges funding from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and thanks Canadian Tire in Goderich for its generous discount on the soil used for the gardens.
