Since 2021, Gateway CERH developed and managed a project to understand local food in Huron County; the G.R.E.A.T. (Growing, Raising, Eating, Accessible, Thriving) Local Food project. The goal of the project was to determine the scope and accessibility of local food in Huron County and make recommendations to increase access to local food for all residents of Huron County. For the purposes of our report, local was defined as grown or produced in Huron County.
It is to the delight of our organization that a report was developed and completed by Sage Milne, research assistant at Gateway CERH in October 2023, as a result of this investigation. Findings from this report show that there a comprehensive and diverse offering of local food in Huron County that range from ingredients on any given grocery list such as flour, milk and eggs, to more specialty products such as pizza, lavender, maple syrup and mushrooms.

This project was funded by the generous Libro Credit Union under their local food accessibility pillar.
