On July 8th-12th, 2024, a group of ambitious high school students attended the Discovery Healthcare Camp (DHC). This medical science summer camp is designed to inspire youth to pursue a career in medicine and the healthcare field. Students learned about a wide range of career options available in the healthcare sector, from clinical roles like doctors and nurses to social work and emergency medical services (EMS). Casting, suturing, injections, medical trivia and capture the flag were some of the featured activities throughout the week.
Held at Camp Klahanie, just outside Goderich, Ontario, DHC provides hands-on experience, workshops and a glimpse into different professions in the healthcare field. The Discovery Healthcare Camp has helped students gain the knowledge and confidence they need to pursue their passions in healthcare. The students also completed a tour of Alexandra Marine and General Hospital (AMGH), in Goderich, Ontario and during the final day of the camp a graduation ceremony was held, where each student received a certificate of completion.
DHC is a collaborative between Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH), Huron Health Systems (HHS) and the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry (Schulich). Gateway CERH was pleased to work with this year's leaders, second and third-year medical students from Schulich.
