Rural residents face unique barriers when it comes to accessing cancer information, screening services, and timely treatment. Unlike urban populations, rural residents often face significant travel time to reach healthcare facilities, limited access to specialized services, and an overall lack of reliable transportation. These disparities can lead to delayed diagnoses, lower screening participation, or even decreased treatment effectiveness and the chance for higher disease mortality.
In recognition of these critical gaps, on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026, from 12 - 1 PM via ZOOM, Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health will dive into “The Importance of Early Detection: Understanding Cancer Screening and Prevention in Ontario.”
This lecture will be led by Susan Somers, a Nurse Practitioner at the Unattached Care Clinic in Goderich, Exeter and Zurich. She will be joined by Alexander Chesnik, a Nurse Practitioner student with a background in Intensive Critical Care. Together they will be helping to shed some light onto cancer risks, prevention methods, and screening services available in our local rural area.
This webinar is open to everyone and is a part of Gateway CERH’s long-term commitment to addressing rural-urban health disparities through education, research, and communication. To attend this event and future presentations, please register on the Gateway CERH website here.
