Summer has come to an official end, and the beautiful season of autumn has come. Autumn brings with it a gorgeous change of colours, some great nights for campfires, dew-covered grass in the mornings, and a brisk cold air. With all this in mind, we must remember that is also a season for illness! Remember to protect yourself from the illnesses that arise in the fall season, and remember that although you may love the cold air, you won’t love catching a cold!

Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health would like to send our love and thanks to our beloved Vice President, Mary Lapaine, and wish her all the best on her recent celebration of her 75th birthday. On Wednesday August 20th Gateway board members, research chairs, and students gathered at The Black Dog Village Pub and Bistro in Bayfield Ontario following a brief meeting for a surprise celebration. As the summer came to an end and fall reared its head we ushered in the new school semester, saying goodbye to a number of summer students, Gateway wishes their students all the best in their studies, and hopes that they will remember their experiences at Gateway for many years to come.

Engage HurON!

On Thursday August 21st the up-and-coming Huron-based youth recruitment, retention, and sustainment group called Engage HurON met for their very first social gathering at The Docks in Bayfield Ontario. With plans to build a hub of resources, networks, and a growing community, Engage HurON has chosen to include Gateway Centre of Excellence In Rural Health in their plans to recruit and retain local youth. Both Gateway and Engage HurON strongly believe that the youths of Huron County are the future of a sustainable economy in this area, and, with such scarce numbers of youths, aim to attract them to stay within the area after their studies are complete. Gateway employees Grant Richard and Stephen Middleton frequently join and host Engage HurON meetings, and have attended the very first social gathering as representatives of Gateway.

Engage HurON has started as a sub-committee of the Community Economic Revitalization Committee (CERC), which Gateway proudly works along-side with, sharing resources, ideas, goals, and challenges.
